TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – July 10, 2008 – Florida homeowners facing foreclosure have access to a lawyer and free legal advice through a program offered by the Florida Bar and Florida Legal Services.

According to Florida Legal Services Inc., 77,000 state homeowners are in foreclosure, making Florida second in the nation only to California. And many others are at least 30 days past due on their mortgage payment, which places them at risk of having their loans foreclosed.

Florida Legal Services and the Florida Bar Association have partnered in establishing a toll-free hotline – (866) 607-2187 – that consumers can call. They’ll be asked a few initial questions about their situation to ensure accurate placement, and then be sent to a free attorney. The attorney will then negotiate with the lender on behalf of the client to keep the home from being foreclosed.

“I applaud Florida Legal Services and the Florida Bar for offering this public service,” says Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson. “Any effort that helps families keep their homes in this uncertain economy is beneficial.”

More than 10,000 Florida attorneys have volunteered their services in the program, according to Florida Legal Services Inc.

Many Floridians will be firing up their propane grills for a traditional backyard barbecue this summer. To help make the grilling experience both safe and enjoyable for consumers, Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson, along with the Florida Propane Safety, Education and Research Council, has compiled a list of propane gas grill and cylinder safety tips:

Propane Grill Do’s:

  • Always read and follow the grill manufacturer’s instructions and keep written materials and manuals in a safe, accessible place.
  • When not in use, make sure all grill burner controls are turned off and that the cylinder valve is closed.
  • Never attempt to move a hot grill.
  • Make sure the grill is shut off and cool to the touch before covering it after use.
  • Always use or store cylinders outdoors in an upright, vertical position.
  • When you fill or exchange your cylinder, have your supplier check for dents, damage, rust or leaks.
  • Before using your propane gas grill, check all connections for tightness using a leak-detection solution.
  • If you experience difficulties in the operation of your gas grill, contact your local propane provider for service.

Propane Grill Don’ts:

  • Do not smoke while handling the propane cylinder.
  • Do not allow children to tamper or play with the cylinder or grill.
  • Do not use, store or transport your cylinder where it would be exposed to high temperatures. (This includes storing spare cylinders under or near the grill.)
  • Never store your cylinder indoors, especially in a garage where temperatures can be high and ignition sources may be present.
  • Never leave your grill unattended when in use.
